Dr. Fabrice Brunet – Montreal Health Innovation District (QIS) and UQAM

Born in France, Dr. Brunet has been working in the field of health and social services, teaching and research for over 30 years. On July 14, 2018, he was made a knight of the Legion of Honor by France for his lifetime career in healthcare both in Canada and France.
Current Positions:
Since January 2023, Dr. Brunet has been President and CEO of the Montreal Health Innovation District (QIS), and since April 2024, he has been Associate Vice-Rector for Health Sciences Development at University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM).
Past positions:
Dr. Brunet left the Centre Hospitalier of University of Montreal (CHUM), after a well-rounded seven-year term of dedication and involvement as President and CEO. During these years, he finalized the construction of the two phases of the hospital, carried out the move and transfer of patients and teams from the three previous CHUM sites to the new hospital campus. He also implemented the ambulatory care program in the hospital as an alternative to hospitalization.
Previously, he was president and CEO of the Sainte-Justine University Health Center in Montreal from January 2009 to September 2018 and president and CEO of both hospitals from September 2015 to 2018.
He always demonstrates excellent leadership, initiative, and experience in meeting future challenges and innovating through care, teaching, research, and facility management activities for the benefit of patients.
His primary research interests are in hospital management and health systems integration, including the use of artificial intelligence and medical information and communication technologies. Throughout his career, he has also developed skills in continuous improvement of quality of care and patient safety, international collaboration and transfer of know-how, among ecosystem partners.
Dr. Brunet’s academic career has included appointments as Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Montreal, Professor of Critical Care in France, and Full Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Head of the Department of Resuscitation and Critical Care, and Medical Director of the Telemedicine Program at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. In February 2017, he was appointed president of the University of Montreal Health Integrated Network, having served as its vice president since 2009. He was also the president of the international mother-child network of 20 university hospitals from 2009 to 2018.
His many accomplishments during his career also include the construction of a clinical and research program in critical care and a cardiac surgery center in Paris, a hospital project in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the creation of an academic intensive care and resuscitation center in Toronto. Numerous modernization projects have been completed under his leadership, including the construction of a new research center and specialized care unit at CHU Sainte-Justine with a budget of $1.5 billion and a new CHUM campus with a budget of $3.5 billions
