Annamaria Altomare is a Researcher in Gastroenterology at the Faculty of Sciences and Technologies for Sustainable Development and One Health, University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome. With a medical background and a PhD in Biochemical and Technological Sciences applied to Food and Nutrition, she combines clinical expertise with translational research in gastroenterology, nutrition, and intestinal pathophysiology.
Her research and teaching activities focus on functional gastrointestinal disorders, intestinal motility and permeability alterations, and the role of the gut microbiota in mucosal and systemic homeostasis. She serves as co-investigator in multicentric clinical trials and leads research projects exploring diet-microbiota interactions, low-grade inflammation, and gut-brain axis disorders.
Her scientific output includes more than fifty indexed international publications (Scopus H-index: 22), encompassing experimental and clinical studies on oxidative stress and inflammation, prebiotics and probiotics use, and modulation of intestinal barrier integrity.
She is a member of the Italian Society of Gastroenterology (SIGE) and the Italian Society of Neurogastroenterology and Intestinal Motility (SINGEM), where she has served on the Executive Committee since 2020. She has received international recognition, including two Travel Grants from the European Society of Gastroenterology (UEGW 2011, 2016) and the Early Career Investigator Award from the American Gastroenterological Association (DDW 2018).
Through a translational and One Health approach, her work bridges basic and clinical research with nutritional science, aiming to develop personalized strategies for the prevention and management of gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases.
