At the Heart of Global Trade: The Strategic Role of the Port of Montreal
On the morning of April 24th, 2025, the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada (ICCC) had the distinct honor of hosting an exceptional conference titled “At the Heart of Global Trade – The Port of Montreal and its Strategic Role”, held at the Sofitel Montréal. This high-level event brought together a distinguished group of business leaders, institutional representatives, and strategic partners committed to strengthening the economic ties between Canada and Italy.
The keynote speaker, Julie Gascon, President and CEO of the Montreal Port Authority, delivered a powerful and insightful presentation highlighting the critical importance of the Port of Montreal as a gateway to the global economy. Drawing from her extensive expertise in maritime logistics and international commerce, Mrs. Gascon emphasized how the port’s strategic positioning plays a pivotal role in the diversification of Canada’s trade relations — particularly in the context of an increasingly complex and competitive global market.
As Canada looks to diversify its international markets, maritime routes continue to gain importance, especially for a country bordered by three oceans. The Port of Montreal, as a central hub in the North Atlantic supply chain, not only facilitates the movement of goods but also represents a key infrastructure for economic growth and innovation.
The discussion was expertly moderated by Philippe Noël, Senior Director of Economic Affairs at the Fédération des chambres de commerce du Québec (FCCQ), who helped guide a dynamic exchange among attendees. Topics covered included supply chain resilience, green logistics, transatlantic trade opportunities, and the evolving role of port authorities in fostering international collaboration.
