The Board of Directors of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada, its members and team extend their congratulations to Mr. Salvatore Sciacchitano, the newly elected President of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Sciacchitano\u2019s candidacy had been\nendorsed by the 44 General Directors of the European Civil Aviation Conference.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His election follows an accomplished\n39-year career in aviation, during which he has served as General Director of\nthe Italian Airworthiness Authority (RAI), as Deputy General Director of the\nItalian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) and Executive Secretary of ECAC between\n2010 and 2018. He has also participated in several ICAO Assemblies as Chief or\nAlternate Chief of the Italian Delegation to ICAO, as well as the Chief\nDelegate of ECAC. He had also recently been appointed to the Italian Delegation\nto the ICAO Council. Mr. Sciacchitano\u2019s three-year term will commence on January 1st<\/sup>, 2020\nduring which he will preside over the Council and represent ICAO at aviation\nevents around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Sciacchitano has previously\nstated that ICAO needed to strengthen its global leadership in implementing its\nstrategic objectives and address \u201cthe pressing challenges of acute global\ntraffic growth<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cI would\nsteer the Council with leadership built on solid know-how and experience,\nneutrality and independence, aiming at consensus in order to take difficult but\nalso long-lasting decisions<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeadership,\nneutrality and independence when dealing with sensitive and controversial\nissues or disputes will be essential, as well as putting in place all the\nnecessary actions to prevent tension or disagreements from escalating<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ICAO<\/a>, with its headquarters in Montreal, is a specialized agency of the United Nations created in 1944 to promote the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation throughout the world. ICAO sets standards and regulations necessary for aviation safety, security, efficiency, capacity and environmental protection, amongst many other priorities.
