A majority of the province\u2019s\nresearch, articles and scientific advances have come from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mat.unical.it\/phd\">Department\nof Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Calabria<\/a>. Professor Nicola Leone, the Director\nof the Department, along with his team of young researchers and PhD students\nfrom UNICAL, received the Best Paper Award for the best scientific article\npublished during the year at the 15th edition of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aixia2016.unige.it\/\">International Conference of the Italian Association for Artificial\nIntelligence (AI*IA 2016)<\/a>, Italy\u2019s most important event in the sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department\u2019s\nresearch focuses on \u200b\u200bMathematics and Computer Science, with substantial scientific\nactivities in the macro-sector of both areas. The Informatics macro-sector is\nan international reference point in the field of artificial intelligence and\nthe University devotes a portion of its research to the theory of databases and\nknowledge. The department yields great success and results which is\ndemonstrated by numerous publications in the most prestigious international\nacademic journals and by numerous national and international awards. As a\nresult of the SILA project funded by the PON Ricerca 2007-2013 program, the\nDepartment created the \u201cLAIA\u201d Laboratory where most of their research on\nartificial intelligence is conducted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department has\ncreated two academic spin-off companies, which continue their work outside of\nthe University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dlvsystem.com\/\"><strong>DLV SYSTEM s.r.l<\/strong> was<\/a> founded by professors and researchers from the University of Calabria, University of Oxford and the Technical University of Vienna in 2005, with the purpose of promoting a successful and widely used system for advanced database applications: knowledge representation and reasoning (DLV). <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dtoklab.com\/\">DtoK Lab<\/a> is also an academic spin-off of UNICAL and is working to enable\ncustomers to turn their data into knowledge by delivering scalable solutions\nfor Big Data analysis in business domains using Cloud technologies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last year\nalone, the province of Cosenza, and more specifically the Mathematics and\nComputer Science Department at UNICAL, has hosted two annual international\nconferences on artificial intelligence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/aiia2019.mat.unical.it\/\">18th International Conference AIIA<\/a> (Italian Association for Artificial\nIntelligence) which is a non-profit scientific society founded in 1988 focused\non artificial intelligence;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/jelia2019.mat.unical.it\/\">16th Edition of JELIA<\/a> (European Conference on Logics in\nArtificial Intelligence) which began back in 1988, as a workshop, designed to\ncreate a European forum that would facilitate the discussion of work in this\nfield. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For the following\nSeptember, UNICAL has already prepared to host the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclweb.org\/anthology\/volumes\/P98-2\/\">36th annual International Conference on Logical\nProgramming<\/a> (ICLP), chaired by Professors Leone and Greco, who have jointly\nreceived an appointment by the international Association of Logical Programming\n(ALP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong>Stay tuned as we feature some of the\nregion\u2019s stand-out innovative companies and institutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/italchamber.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Cavalieri-Calabria-Vini-less-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13646\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There have been many advances in modern computing technologies that have resulted in an increase in major breakthroughs in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and the province of Cosenza, Italy is emerging as a key contributor to this sector both domestically and internationally.
